Growth Strategy #20: Skill Stacking

13 Oct 2023

I have personally experienced the power of skill stacking in my own professional and entrepreneurial journey. I often combine my coaching expertise with my passion for innovation, writing and digital marketing to stand out in a crowded market.

This combination with other skills and my domain expertise has inspired me to create a journaling platform and toolkit, as I understand the needs and challenges of my target audience, and create content that resonates deeply with them.

Good for: Developing powerful and complementary skills that sets you apart from others.

I recently listened to "Happy Sexy Millionaire," by Stephen Bartlett who encourages readers to embrace the concept of skill stacking as a pathway to success. He emphasizes that skill stacking allows individuals to create their own unique combinations of skills that set them apart in the world of work and business.

Bartlett suggests that rather than conforming to societal norms or traditional career paths, individuals should focus on developing a diverse range of skills that align with their passions and strengths. As Bartlett puts it, "Skill stacking is the art of combining multiple skills, talents, and interests to create a unique cocktail that no one else can mix."

What is skill stacking?

The concept of skill stacking was popularized by entrepreneur and author Scott Adams who introduced the idea of combining different skills to create a unique and valuable set that sets individuals apart. Skill stacking involves the deliberate pursuit and development of a diverse range of skills that complement and enhance each other. Instead of specializing in one skill, the aim is to become proficient in multiple domains.

This approach appeals to me because a lot of advice suggests we should focus on developing our weaknesses because it emphasizes leveraging and further developing one's strengths and passions. By focusing on strengths, individuals can create a unique combination of skills that aligns with their natural talents and interests, allowing them to excel in their chosen areas. I have found this approach not only maximizes my level of personal fulfilment, but it also enables me to make a significant impact and stand out by offering something truly unique.

When working in education, I have pigeon-holed myself as an expert in behaviour, safeguarding and inclusion and my 'knowledge stack' aka expertise is highly valued. To compensate for any weaknesses or gaps in my skill set, I actively seek out and collaborate with individuals who possess complementary skills. I believe that working with others who excel in areas where I may be lacking enhances the overall effectiveness and success of our collective efforts.

By surrounding myself with individuals who bring different strengths to the table, we can leverage each other's expertise and create a dynamic synergy that surpasses what we could achieve individually.

How Skill Stacking Helps You Stand Out:

  1. Versatility: Skill stackers possess the ability to adapt and excel in different situations. They bring a multifaceted approach to problem-solving and can apply their varied skills to tackle challenges creatively.

  2. Uniqueness: By combining skills from different fields, skill stackers create a distinct blend that sets them apart from others. This unique combination enhances their personal brand and makes them more memorable to potential employers or clients.

  3. Increased Value: Skill stackers offer more value to employers and clients due to their ability to handle a broader range of tasks. They become a valuable asset in any team or organization, as they can contribute to multiple areas and wear different hats as needed.

While skill stacking provides versatility, it may not result in deep expertise in any particular area. Some industries or roles may require specialized knowledge that skill stackers may not possess. Developing a diverse skill set requires dedication and effort. It may take longer to become proficient in multiple areas compared to focusing on a single specialization.

Checklist to Identify Your Unique Skill Stack:

Assessing your top skills can be a valuable exercise in understanding your strengths and identifying areas where you can excel. Here are some steps to help you assess your skills effectively:

  1. Self-Reflection. Take time for self-reflection and introspection. Consider the activities, tasks, or areas where you feel confident, enjoy doing, and receive positive feedback. Reflect on your past experiences and identify patterns of success or areas where you have excelled.

  2. Feedback and Input. Seek feedback from others, such as mentors, colleagues, friends, or family members. They may have insights into your strengths that you might overlook.

  3. Self-Assessment Tools. Utilize self-assessment tools and quizzes designed to identify strengths and skills. These tools, such as personality tests or skill assessments, can provide a structured approach to identifying your core strengths.

  4. Past Accomplishments. Reflect on your past accomplishments and achievements. Identify the skills that were instrumental in those successes. Look for common threads or skills that consistently contributed to positive outcomes.

  5. Passion and Interest. Consider the skills that align with your passions and interests. Skills that you genuinely enjoy and are enthusiastic about tend to be the ones you naturally excel at and have a desire to develop further.

  6. Observation. Pay attention to moments where you effortlessly demonstrate certain skills or abilities. Notice the tasks or activities that come naturally to you and that you enjoy engaging in without feeling overwhelmed.

Remember, assessing your skills is an ongoing process. Regularly revisit and reassess your skills as you grow, acquire new experiences, and develop new areas of expertise.

In summary, skill stacking has been a game-changer for me in my journey to excel in work and business. By focusing on developing and leveraging my unique strengths and passions, I have created a powerful set of skills that sets me apart from the crowd.

It has opened up numerous opportunities, allowed me to adapt to changing demands, and fostered my personal growth. While I acknowledge my weaknesses, the key to my success lies in embracing my strengths and collaborating with others who possess complementary skills. It's a strategy that encourages me to be versatile, adaptable, and constantly learning, which has been the key to standing out in a competitive world.
